On this page we will try to answer many of the commonly asked questions, beginning with some pictures of the steps in shoeing

Prior to trimming the hoof

After the hoof has been trimmed and filed and is ready for shoe.

After the shoe has been attached.
Thoughts on shoeing in the winter months.
I don’t mind leaving shoes on through the winter. If the horse is left with shoes on they should be shod on a regular basis.
This will keep the horse in a proper balance.
During snowy weather my concern is the snow that sticks in the shoe can get very thick,
causing the horse to be out of balance and adding pressure to joints, tendons, and ligaments. In theses conditions, consider trimming the hooves and pulling the shoes.
In most cases there will be no problems with still using the horse. The horse can be used in an arena or
just for a nice pleasure ride. Pulling the shoe will also help to toughen the hoof. In addition, I suggest that the owners
have their horses checked and the hooves trimmed in the middle of the winter to keep the horse in proper balance.
